Ireland Under-21 manager Don Givens has picked a strong 17-man squad for the international friendly match against the Netherlands at the Stadium De Koel in Venlo on Tuesday, 27th March (kick-off 8pm).
Stephen Quinn (Sheffield United) and Darron Gibson (Royal Antwerp) were both included in the Ireland senior squad for the EURO 2008 qualifier San Marino last month and the pair will now be aiming to earn their first caps at Under-21 level against the Dutch. Glasgow Celtic defender Darren O'Dea is also selected, fresh from his impressive displays against AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League last-16 tie.
The four eircom league players in the squad are UCD goalkeeper Darren Quigley, Paul Keegan of Drogheda United and Bohemians duo John-Paul Kelly and Conor Powell.
Givens is preparing his squad for the 2009 UEFA Championship qualifying series which gets underway in September. Ireland's group opponents will be Portugal, England, Bulgaria and Montenegro.
"We know we have a tough campaign ahead of us in the qualifiers, so the game against the Netherlands will serve as a good build-up towards the competitive fixtures later in the year," said Givens.
"The Dutch are hosting the Under-21 European Championship Finals in the summer and are certain to provide us with a good test."
He added: "I was pleased with the level of performance from the team during our three games at the Madeira tournament last month. I'm hopeful that the addition of players like Stephen Quinn, Darren O'Dea and Darron Gibson for this match can give us further quality in key areas of the pitch."
